Understanding the Drug Testing Process

Many people have to go through the drug testing process regardless of their likelihood to have taken drugs. Some people have to be tested for drugs before starting a new job, for example. If you have never taken a drug test before, you may not know what to expect.

The video below describes the entire drug testing process.

First, you’ll need to check in at the drug testing location. This is important because your employer will need to have access to your results. The clinic will typically take a urine sample in a controlled environment. You won’t be able to bring any personal items into the room where you give your sample.

Once your sample has been collected, it will be tested for a variety of drugs based on what your employer has ordered. If the test doesn’t come back negative, the sample is sent off for in-depth testing to check for specific drugs. This way, the drug testing lab can provide accurate, specific results. This also allows you to contest the results based on possible contaminants (eating poppy seeds, for example).
